High School Football Championships Set for Sam Boyd Stadium
RENO, NEV. - The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association,
the non-profit governing body of high school athletics
in the Silver State announced that it will hold its 2004
NIAA 1A/2A/3A and 4A Nevada State High School Football
Championships at Sam Boyd Stadium.
“We are very excited to announce that all four of
our state championship football games will be played in
a first-class stadium,” said Donnie Nelson, Assistant
Director with the NIAA. “We are thankful that the
Thomas and Mack / Sam Boyd Stadium personnel and UNLV athletic
staff were very cooperative in our negotiation efforts.
They understand our non-profit status and budget concerns,
and they were willing to work with us.”
The NIAA will conduct a triple-header of Class 1A (8-man),
2A and 3A state championship football games on Saturday,
November 20 beginning at 12:00 p.m. The Class 4A state
championship is set for a 12:30 p.m. kickoff on Saturday,
December 4.
“I am very excited that all four of our state championship
football games will return to Sam Boyd Stadium this fall,” said
Dr. Jerry Hughes, Executive Director of the NIAA. “I
truly appreciate the cooperation from the Thomas and Mack
group for their efforts to make these events possible for
Nevada's top high school football teams. Our student-athletes
will truly enjoy playing in Sam Boyd Stadium.”
The NIAA last held a state championship football game
at Sam Boyd Stadium in 2002 when McQueen and Desert Pines
squared off for the 4A title. Prior to that, the NIAA conducted
quadruple headers at Sam Boyd Stadium. The NIAA held all
four state championship football games on one day there
from 1990 to 1998.
The state championship football games are scheduled to
rotate between Southern Nevada and Northern Nevada on a
yearly basis. The NIAA conducted its 2A, 3A and 4A championship
games at Mackay Stadium on the campus of the University
of Nevada, Reno, last year. <more
