Sting Power Past Storm With Second
Half Rally

LAS VEGAS SPORTSPARK - An early second half push made the difference, powering the Bantam Sting past the Bantam Storm in the first game of the Summer Nevada Indoor Lacrosse League.

The Sting got the game started early, converting on two goals from Brandon Edgell and a third goal from Dustin Dresel to give them the early lead. After giving up three quick goals, Storm goaltender Joseph Peden settled down and took control of the net.

The Storm tried to come back, but an early power play with 11:32 on the clock turned up empty. Shortly after the power play ended, R.J. Hamel broke free down the field, passing the ball to Cody Root who flung the ball into the net for the first Storm goal.

The Storm kept the pressure on the Sting with additional shots on goal, including a near miss off the crossbar from Michael Visconti, before giving the Sting a late first half power play with 5:37 on the clock.

R.J. Hamel took scoring for the Storm into his own hands late in the first half with a shot that found the net, and Erik “Shoes” Brimhall added a goal before the end of the first half. While the Sting ran out to an early lead, the Storm proved it was up for the fight and came back to tie the game 3-3 at halftime.

The Sting started a strong second half behind the third goal of a hat trick from Brandon Edgell and two more shots right on mark from Taylor Covington and Chasen Shreve. With the Sting again out ahead 6-3, it was time for the Storm to rally around a leader.

Erik “Shoes” Brimhall, aptly named because of his bright yellow shoes that transport him down the field, stepped to the net to cut the Storm’s deficit to 6-4.

“Nobody was really covering me,” Brimhall said. “I wanted to take advantage of that and get us back in the game.”

The Storm had another opportunity two players up on a power play with 15:30 on the clock, but they we’re unable to take convert in the advantage situation.

The Sting’s Chasen Shreve put another shot in the net with 12:00 on the clock, and then teammate Kyle Allen got into the scoring action placing a rebound shot into the goal with 10:40 left in the half. The Sting had another mid-half power play opportunity, but again came up empty.

Down 8-4, the Storm’s Erik “Shoes” Brimhall charged down the field on two breakaways to cap off his four-goal game.

“I really had a pretty good first game,” the 14-year-old Leavitt Middle School student joked.

But that was as close as the Storm would get. Michael Quinn capped off the Sting’s 10-6 victory with two late second half goals that gave his team the win.

However that didn’t detract from “Shoes’” outlook for the season.

“I think we can still take it all the way,” Brimhall said.

In other first week lacrosse action…

The Sting shut out the Storm 2-0 in a battle of 6-11 year old teams.

Jake Friedlander and Wayne Horlocker scored the goals for the Sting. Justin Anderson, Ryan Bybee, Joel Perrigo and Parker McDonough had shots on goal for the Storm.

In women’s action, Blair Empey had a hat trick to lead the Teal team to an 8-5 win over the Green team.

Missy Hanson scored two goals for Teal, while Jess Visconti, Bri Turns, and Mel Zobrist added a goal each.

Tori Catlanch scored a hat trick for Green and Jazz Mohammadi and Katlin McNight added a goal each.

Catlanch and Empey led all shooters with seven shots on goal. <more stories>
