Sundevils Blank Warriors 42-0 in Week One
WESTERN HS – The Eldorado Sundevils opened week
one of the football season at Western High School taking
on the Warriors.
The Warriors opened strong with a return by Damien
Rhodes.
But after driving down to the Eldorado 15-yard-line Western
was forced to turnover the ball on downs.
The Sundevils promptly marched down the field and converted
a 24-yard run from junior Vernon Wesley into their first
score of the game. Wesley also converted the two-point
conversion, and with 6:40 left in the first quarter, Eldorado
had an 8-0 lead.
The first game jitters then struck the teams. Western
was hit with two penalties and then fumbled the ball over
to Eldorado at the 19-yard-line. Eldorado moved the ball
to the 27-yard-line before turning it over to Western on
a botched lateral. Western tried to move the ball and ended
up fumbling it at the 20-yard-line. Eldorado went back
on the attack and converted the turnover into a Vernon
Wesley 20-yard touchdown run with 2:46 on the clock. The
pass failed, but the Sundevils still enjoyed a 14-0 lead.
With time fading in the first quarter, Western was unable
to move the ball and was forced to punt from their own
12-yard-line. Eldorado took over the ball, and on the first
play of the second quarter converted a 40-yard run by Marvin
Herring into a touchdown. The pass from Austin
Roehr to
Rodden Villarama was good and with 11:49 left in the second
quarter; the Sundevils extended their lead to 22-0.
Western, with only seven players off the field on any
given play, was starting to show signs of fatigue and was
unable to move the ball against the Eldorado Sundevils.
A long punt pushed Eldorado back temporarily, but with
6:35 left in second quarter, Vernon Wesley found another
hole in the Warrior defense and ran down the field 49 yards
for another touchdown. Jeff Green added the two-point conversion
and Eldorado had a commanding 30-0 lead.
Western faced a scare when quarterback Hector
Murillo limped off the field with 4:40 left in the first half.
The reserve quarterback came in and Western fumbled the
first play, turning the ball over to Eldorado.
The Sundevils marched down the field and took a chance
on fourth down at the Western 13. However, the Warriors
defense held tough and forced Eldorado to turn over the
ball on downs.
With time running out in the first half, Devonte
Craig ran down the field for a 15-yard gain. Quarterback Hector
Murillo returned to the gridiron and the Warrior offense
turned around and fumbled the ball with :09.9 on the clock.
The first half ended with Eldorado in the driver’s
seat with a 30-0 lead.
In the second half, Marvin Herring got Eldorado going
with a run that started at the Sundevils 15-yard-line and
was only stopped by Western kicker Hector Murillo at the
Warrior’s 28-yard-line. Herring carried the ball
a second time, getting the Sundevils within striking distance
at the Western 4-yard-line. With 7:57 remaining on the
clock in the third quarter, Eldorado struck again, this
time converting on a two yard run by sophomore running
back Jeff Green. The run failed, but Eldorado extended
their lead to 36-0.
Warrior De’jon Hall tried to the get the offense
moving with a nice return off the ensuing kickoff, but
once again Western stalled and punted to Eldorado.
Eldorado promptly marched down to the Warrior 17-yard-line
before turning over the ball on a fumble with 3:08 left
in the third quarter. Western nearly fumbled back the ball
at their own 14-yard-line before getting fired up and moving
the ball. A big 31-yard pass reception from Warrior quarterback
Hector Murillo to Kolin Niday got the ball into Sundevils
territory before having to turn the ball back over to Eldorado.
Eldorado took the first play from scrimmage and took a
47-yard run by Marvin Herring into the end zone. An illegal
formation call negated the touchdown and Western ended
up stopping the Eldorado march at their own 5-yard-line.
Western was unable to move the ball against the stubborn
Eldorado defense and was forced to kick a 35-yard punt
from their own 5-yard-line. Sundevil Marvin Herring brought
the ball back 15 yards and after a couple more plays; Daniel
Haynes ran a 15-yard touchdown. With 1:59 left in the game,
